I was born in Sea Level Hospital, located in Northeastern Carteret County, on December 20th, 1965. I grew up around the Atlantic area of North Carolina and could always be found out and about or playing sports. My father's service as an MP (Military Police) in the Army (503rd Company) in Frankfurt Germany from 1959 until 1963 and on Cherry Point Air Force Base initially sparked my passion for law enforcement. After graduating from East Carteret High School in June of 1984, I married my high school sweetheart and, though the marriage didn't last, we had a beautiful daughter named Jonnell. I stayed in the area and counted down the time until I was old enough to begin law enforcement training and chase my dreams.
I moved to Duplin County in 1989 and instantly fell in love with the community. While living in Albertson, I was blessed to meet the wonderful woman who is now my wife, Gertie. In late 1990, we were blessed again with the birth of my pride and joy, John David, Jr. and our little family was complete.
With a son looking up to me, I knew it was time to start working towards my goals. So, in 1991, we moved back to Carteret County and I did just that. After completing BLET (Basic Law Enforcement Training), I began my 12 year career as a Marine Fisheries Officer. My time with the Marine Fisheries Department honed my skills and reinforced my belief that I was called to serve the public in a higher capacity through the office of Sheriff.
With years of experience under my belt, along with my passion to serve, I am back in Duplin County to make a difference, supporting this community and all of its great citizens. I want to be your Sheriff and your ally in Moving Duplin County Forward to being one of the best places to call home in North Carolina.
